Why this exists

If anyone on Low Tide is getting paid, California requires this before they set foot on set: the coverage that pays a crew member’s medical bills and lost wages when they are hurt working for you. Thirty-one people are on your crew list, every one of them paid, so the answer was decided the day you cast the film.

Most line producers carry this at two percent of payroll, because that’s the number that gets repeated on every call sheet in this town. Payroll runs the real figure closer to four, once the classification codes for your grips and your gaffer post against actual hours. On a crew your size, that gap runs to about $4,600 nobody put in the budget.

Get this wrong and it costs you. The city’s permit desk wants proof this is in place before it signs off on your nine locations, and a policy that’s still being placed reads the same as no policy at all. Or it shows up later, on a morning when someone slips off a riser on the Sun Valley stage. If the payroll service’s numbers do not match what the policy actually covers, the claim gets denied, and the crew member is the one who finds out first.
